Mennonite hospital breaks ground on $51.8 million, 47,000 sq ft Aibonito expansion
The Mennonite Health System broke ground on September 28, 2026 on a $51.8 million expansion of the Menonita Aibonito Hospital in Aibonito, in Puerto Rico's central mountains, wjournalpr.com reported on September 29. The governor and the housing secretary were quoted at the groundbreaking, according to the outlet. The same article ran on its sister site theweeklyjournal.com, and noticel.com and metro.pr also covered the announcement.
What the hospital will add
The plan calls for a new three-story building of about 47,000 square feet, connected to the existing hospital by a bridge, a new entrance and access road from Julio Cintrón Avenue, more parking and a community plaza of about 28,700 square feet, the outlet reported. The new space will hold a sleep lab, an integrated care center for diabetes and chronic conditions, new outpatient services, medical offices and rooms for long-term care patients. The outlet gave no completion date.
Of the total, $45.7 million comes from the Department of Housing under the federal CDBG-MIT mitigation program (the housing secretary cited $45.6 million), and the rest from the hospital's own funds, noticel.com reported. The hospital was one of two organizations selected for funds under that program, according to metro.pr. The health system began operations in 1944 in the La Plata neighborhood of Aibonito.
What the permit file shows
The project appears in permit records analysed by RED Atlas as "Access Enhancement to Mennonite General Hospital, Inc.", for the construction of parking, an access road and a medical-services structure on a 20,689 m2 property at 399 Calle Julio Cintrón in Barrio Pueblo. An infrastructure recommendation was approved on January 9, 2026 and health-and-safety recommendations on January 25 and March 6, 2026. A consolidated construction permit application in the file was archived on February 7, 2026, an environmental determination has been pending since April 23, 2026, and an incidental-works permit filed on October 15, 2026 (case 2025-660039-PUI-303128) is marked incomplete, a day after a legal pre-consultation. As of October 21, 2026 the file holds no construction permit recorded as approved.
On the hospital's main 29,161 m2 property at Carretera 726 Km 0.4, a separate file covers a combined heat and power plant with a potable-water well, a pump house, a water treatment plant, a storage tank and a propane tank; its consolidated construction permit (case 2025-634219-PCOC-327357) has been in rectification since June 3, 2026 and lists 540 days of work. A permit for a 1,000 kW generator on the same property was approved on October 14, 2026.
